EDUCATION To address gaps in the field of education among the host IP communities, Mindoro Nickel sustained its scholarship program to qualified Mangyans.  The scholarship grants were implemented in coordination with Mangyan associations, the barangay local government units and the Philippine Department of Education. For the current school year 2009-2010, there is a scholarship program for 218 students coming from the host Mangyan villages.  The breakdown of the sponsored students consisted of 72 in pre-school and adult literacy programs, 114 in elementary and 32 in high school. For school year 2009-2010, Mindoro Nickel continued its support for the Bright Minds Read program in partnership with the Philippine Department of Education and the Ronald McDonald House Charities.  This unique educational program aims to improve the reading and comprehension skills of Grade 1 school children.  This year, the program covered some 10,500 Grade 1 pupils and 298 public school teachers (who were provided training kits).
